Abstract

Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was pardoned by President Donald Trump for his corruption conviction, after having his prison sentence commuted five years earlier. Blagojevich, a Democrat, was removed from office in 2009 for trying to solicit bribes to fill Barack Obama's vacated US Senate seat. Trump, who has shown sympathy towards convicted politicians, cut short Blagojevich's 14-year sentence, citing unfair treatment by the criminal justice system. The president's pardon power, as outlined in the US Constitution, allows for broad discretion in granting clemency, with past presidents using it to convey their views on justice and mercy.
