Abstract

This article focuses on the historical and intellectual significance of the correspondence between Peter Abelard, a 12th-century philosopher and theologian, and Héloïse, his student and later abbess. Their preserved letters, written after their romantic and physical relationship ended, provide insight into their passionate affair, philosophical debates, and differing views on love, marriage, and religion. Héloïse’s efforts ensured the survival of these letters, which have contributed to their enduring legacy as medieval intellectuals and romantic icons. The couple’s story, marked by tragedy including Abelard’s castration and their subsequent religious lives, has inspired centuries of artistic and literary works, cementing their place in history.
