Abstract

The article focuses on advocating for a skills-first approach to hiring and talent management, emphasizing the value of workers without four-year college degrees. It highlights how unnecessary degree requirements exclude capable candidates, limit diversity—particularly among Black, Indigenous, and Hispanic or Latinx populations—and hinder companies’ ability to fill roles efficiently, especially in growing sectors like technology. Case studies from IBM, Cleveland Clinic, Aon, Delta Air Lines, and Bank of America illustrate how revising job descriptions, creating apprenticeships and training programs, retraining managers, and fostering internal career mobility can expand talent pools and promote equity. The authors argue that embedding skills-based practices across organizations, supported by leadership commitment, can improve workforce diversity, employee retention, and societal economic inclusion.
