Abstract
The British Museum is investigating a diptych that links Albrecht Dürer and Christian Ethiopia, shedding light on how European icons were incorporated into African traditions. The diptych, with one side enamelled in France and the other crafted in Ethiopia, depicts an Orthodox hermit saint with four lions. The piece, likely worn as a talisman by an Ethiopian chief, was looted during the battle of Maqdala in 1868 and acquired by the British Museum. The diptych, which has received little attention until now, is being thoroughly researched, revealing intriguing cross-cultural connections between European and Ethiopian Christian art.
