Abstract

Fay Victor, a singer, has released a new album called "Life Is Funny That Way" in which she aims to bring the music of pianist Herbie Nichols into the mainstream. Nichols was a maverick pianist in the 1950s who made visionary music. Victor formed the group Herbie Nichols Sung to set his music to words, and the album features her band performing Nichols' compositions. Victor's interest in Nichols' music stems from its intellectual rigor and humor, which she finds resonates with her own Trinidadian heritage. She also highlights the importance of opening Nichols' music up to a wider audience. The album showcases Victor's talent as a vocalist and her ability to navigate the complexities of Nichols' music.
