Abstract

The article focuses on the exhibition "The Ancestors Are Talking: Paintings by the Indigenous Seven," currently on display at the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, celebrating the influential artwork of the Indigenous Group of Seven, also known as the Professional Native Indian Artists Incorporated (PNIAI). This group, formed in the early 1970s, includes notable artists such as Jackson Beardy, Eddy Cobiness, Alex Janvier, Norval Morrisseau, Daphne Odjig, Carl Ray, and Joseph Sánchez, who is the last living member and curator of the exhibition. The exhibition features approximately 75 paintings that highlight the group's revolutionary contributions to contemporary Indigenous art, showcasing their unique Woodland School style, which integrates First Nation spirituality and storytelling. The exhibition runs through October 29, 2025, and emphasizes the artists' roles in breaking barriers and advocating for Indigenous representation in the art world. [Extracted from the article]
