Abstract
This article examines the discussion of the Donation of Constantine in the *Granarium*, an encyclopedia compiled by John Whethamstede, abbot of St. Albans, in the 1430s. It highlights Whethamstede's unique list of reasons to doubt the Donation's authenticity, which differ from contemporaneous critiques by Nicolas of Cusa, Lorenzo Valla, and Reginald Pecock, revealing that skepticism about the Donation was more widespread and rooted in diverse intellectual traditions than previously recognized. The article situates Whethamstede's treatment within the broader context of fifteenth-century conciliar debates on papal-imperial relations and church governance, noting his use of various historical sources and political treatises rather than humanist methods. Whethamstede's *Granarium* thus represents a distinctive, non-humanistic approach to questioning the historicity of the Donation, reflecting the complex ecclesiastical and political concerns of his time.
