Abstract
This article focuses on an innovative blended teaching mode combining a massive open online course (MOOC) and COVID-19-related scientific papers with traditional face-to-face instruction in a veterinary microbiology course at a Chinese agricultural university. The study found that while final exam scores under this blended approach were not statistically higher than those from online-only or offline-only teaching modes, the new method did not reduce teaching quality. Most students expressed satisfaction with the blended mode, reporting that reading COVID-19-related papers helped them better understand virology, reduced their anxiety about the pandemic, and enhanced their professional identity. The findings suggest this blended teaching approach may serve as a useful reference for educators aiming to maintain or improve teaching quality during disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
