Abstract
This article focuses on applying dynamic systems theory and methods to the study of children's learning and development within complex, multitiered contexts. It highlights three key scenarios: (1) intrinsic dynamics, where a construct's change over time can arise solely from its own history without external influences; (2) the variability of effect sizes depending on the time intervals between observations, showing that both magnitude and direction of effects can change with measurement timing; and (3) the limitations of using between-person data to infer within-person processes, emphasizing that individual differences and nonstationarity often violate assumptions needed for such generalizations. The article advocates for translating dynamic systems principles into testable hypotheses using advanced quantitative methods, underscoring the need for intensive longitudinal data and person-specific modeling to better capture developmental complexity.
