Abstract
This article examines the origins, evolution, and future directions of natural history collections, highlighting their role as repositories of Earth's biodiversity and geological history. Initially formed as "cabinets of curiosities" during the Renaissance and Enlightenment to showcase exotic specimens, these collections shifted in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries toward systematic scientific documentation. Today, natural history collections support research, conservation, and education, increasingly incorporating digitization and ethical considerations such as decolonization and community involvement. Looking ahead, advances like biobanking, artificial intelligence, and immersive technologies are expected to enhance the scientific and public value of these collections amid growing environmental challenges.
