Abstract

This article evaluates the applicability of a reconstruction method, based on ^137Cs (cesium-137) depth distributions in bottom sediments, to estimate long-term changes in particulate and dissolved ^137Cs concentrations in pond water within the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) evacuation zone. The study analyzed sediment cores and water samples from three ponds near the FDNPP, finding that the method aligned well with observations in deeper ponds with inflow and outflow but underestimated initial ^137Cs concentrations in shallower, closed ponds. The authors highlight that pond characteristics, catchment conditions, and sediment core selection critically influence reconstruction accuracy, suggesting the method’s suitability primarily for deeper ponds with active water flow.
