Abstract
The article discusses the evolutionary link between the long, ribbony tails of luna moths and their adaptation to warmer climates. Research by behavioral ecologist Juliette Rubin indicates that these wing streamers, which have evolved independently multiple times within the Saturniidae family, may serve as a defense mechanism against bats rather than for mating purposes. The study highlights that prolonged warm temperatures allow moth larvae to feed longer, resulting in larger wings that enhance their survival. The findings were published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B and suggest that environmental factors play a significant role in the development of these unique physical traits.
