Abstract

This article examines the impact of biophilic design—an approach integrating natural elements such as greenery, natural light, and outdoor spaces—on employees' physical and mental health in office environments in Dalian, China. The study categorizes 13 office spaces into four groups based on their level of biophilic integration, finding that offices combining indoor plants with outdoor terraces (Group D) yield the most significant improvements in mood, sleep quality, stress reduction, and work efficiency. Using a mixed-methods approach with surveys and analytic models (Analytic Hierarchy Process and TOPSIS), the research highlights the synergistic benefits of multi-element biophilic design and supports theories like Attention Restoration Theory regarding cognitive and emotional restoration. While confirming the positive effects of biophilic design on employee well-being and productivity, the study notes limitations including its cross-sectional design, reliance on self-reported data, and cultural specificity, recommending future longitudinal and cross-cultural research with objective physiological measures.
