Abstract
This article focuses on a single-center study comparing the electrolytic method (EM) and hydrogen peroxide (HP) as adjuncts to mechanical decontamination in the reconstructive therapy of peri-implantitis, an inflammatory condition affecting dental implants. The study involved 19 patients with 23 implants exhibiting well-contained peri-implant bone defects and found that both EM and HP effectively reduced clinical signs of inflammation and improved radiographic bone levels over 12 months, with EM showing a higher, though not statistically significant, disease resolution rate (~91% vs. 75%). Baseline probing pocket depth and intrabony defect depth were identified as predictors of treatment outcome. The authors conclude that EM combined with mechanical instrumentation is a safe and effective surface decontamination strategy, but emphasize that larger multicenter trial results are needed to confirm these preliminary findings.
