Mediated by the materiality of spaces: Language, mobility, gender and sexuality in the posthuman era.

This commentary examines how the special issue "Mobilising Language, Gender and Sexuality Studies" advances posthumanist approaches in sociolinguistics by emphasizing the materiality of spaces in shaping language practices among mobile communities such as migrants, asylum seekers, sex workers, and domestic workers. It highlights how these groups negotiate identities related to gender and sexuality through embodied, multimodal, and multisensory practices across real and imagined, near and distant spaces. The commentary underscores the importance of centering research on posthumanism, the Global South, and alternative sociolinguistic methodologies to better understand the complexities of language, mobility, resistance, and identity formation. It also calls for greater inclusion of Global South scholars and attention to how habitus and spatial contexts influence migrant experiences and activism in diverse sociopolitical settings.
