Abstract
This article focuses on the documentation and use of marine medicinal seaweeds by Indigenous Fijians in coastal villages of Viti Levu, Fiji. It identifies ten commonly used seaweed species, detailing their traditional applications for ailments such as heart disease, skin disorders, and intestinal problems, with preparation methods including boiling, raw consumption, and incorporation into meals. The study highlights the crucial role of traditional healers in Fijian communities and reveals a decline in the transmission of marine medicinal knowledge to younger generations. It emphasizes the need for further scientific research on the medicinal properties of these marine plants and advocates for integrating traditional medicine with modern healthcare to preserve cultural heritage and reduce reliance on synthetic drugs.
