Abstract

The article focuses on Johann Wilhelm Weinmann, a Bavarian pharmacist and plantsman known for his patronage of botanical artists in the early 1700s, particularly through the eight-volume work *Phytanthoza icongraphia* (1737–1745). This publication features hundreds of botanical portraits produced using an innovative "mock mezzotint" engraving method and credits the engravers rather than the original watercolor artists. The work illustrates cultivated plants typical of wealthy garden collections of the period, including many exotic succulents and cacti that required indoor cultivation in orangeries. A modern edition of the book, smaller in size and accompanied by an essay, presents selected engravings of succulents and cacti, though it lacks plant identifications and labels.
