Abstract
The article focuses on three distinct agricultural education and sustainability initiatives. First, it discusses challenges in cattle retained ownership programs, highlighting market viability, producer engagement, and feedyard turnaround times as key limitations, while emphasizing the role of Extension programming in supporting sustainable producer practices. Second, it presents a study on ethnobotany applied to ruminant feeding in São Paulo, Brazil, where farmers use multi-species herbal leys and native plants to enhance livestock nutrition, forage quality, and ecosystem services, based on empirical knowledge aligned with scientific literature. Third, it describes a two-week agriculture institute at Mississippi State University designed to improve agricultural literacy among 5th–12th grade teachers, particularly in minority and high-poverty communities, resulting in significant gains in teachers’ content knowledge and enthusiasm for classroom implementation.
