Abstract

This article focuses on the 2015 data breach of Ashley Madison, a dating website facilitating extramarital affairs, which exposed the personal information of approximately 33 million users. The breach, carried out by a group called "The Impact Team," revealed significant shortcomings in the company's records retention and data management practices, including inadequate data deletion despite paid account removal, over-retention of sensitive data, and insufficient security measures. The incident highlighted the real-world consequences of such breaches, including personal and legal ramifications, and underscored the need for clear retention policies, robust security controls, data minimization, and regulatory compliance. Ashley Madison continues to operate with improved security, but the breach remains a cautionary example for organizations handling sensitive user data.
