Abstract
This article focuses on a training program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago that enables intensive care unit (ICU) nurses to safely administer chemotherapy and immunotherapy outside of oncology units. The program requires non-oncology nurses to complete the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Fundamentals of Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Administration™ course and an internal oncology-specific electronic medical record training, followed by a clinical practicum with competency assessments. Developed through interprofessional collaboration, the initiative aims to reduce the burden on oncology staff, improve cross-department coordination, and enhance patient safety. The hospital plans to expand the training to other units and therapies, addressing challenges related to staff unfamiliarity through ongoing education and competency evaluations.
