Abstract
The article focuses on how companies commonly mismanage safety by treating it primarily as a compliance cost rather than a strategic performance driver. Despite significant investments and regulatory oversight, workplace accidents and product recalls remain high because executives often underinvest in safety and respond to crises with short-term, image-focused measures. The authors argue that safety can enhance customer satisfaction, employee welfare, sales, and long-term firm value when integrated into core business strategy through a five-step process: defining safety clearly, selecting relevant metrics, anticipating and preventing risks, customizing training, and incentivizing preventive behaviors. Case studies from diverse organizations illustrate how reframing safety as a value accelerator rather than a cost center leads to measurable improvements in safety outcomes and business performance.
