Abstract
Playing the Market: Retail Investment and Speculation in Twentieth-Century Britain. Heinemann's characterization of the City of London as an elite cabal harbouring anti-growth and anti-entrepreneurial ethics sits somewhat uncomfortably with the rest of I Playing the Market i stance against declinist narratives. Such an investigation is, however, likely to strengthen Heinemann's account of the importance of morality and emotion to the appeal of the market throughout the period. [Extracted from the article]
