Abstract
The article focuses on how improving internal "idea marketplaces"—the systems that connect employees who identify unmet needs with those who have solutions—can significantly boost innovation within organizations. Research involving chief innovation officers (CIOs) and chief strategy officers (CSOs) from multinational companies such as Microsoft, LEGO, Coca-Cola, Cisco, Bayer, and 3M reveals that many promising ideas already exist internally but are often overlooked due to structural barriers, limited review capacity, and cultural deterrents. Effective idea marketplaces involve improving innovation processes, reworking organizational structures to decentralize decision-making, and fostering supportive cultures that encourage idea sharing and sustained employee engagement. Implementing these practices can unlock substantial untapped value by accelerating the development and adoption of existing ideas, thereby enhancing competitive advantage.
