Abstract

The article focuses on the impact of generational differences and perceptions within fisheries management, emphasizing how assumptions about generational identity can influence professional interactions, communication, and mentoring. It discusses generational theory, originally developed by Karl Mannheim, which links shared historical experiences to distinct generational perspectives, but also highlights growing criticism of generational labels as scientifically unfounded and potentially harmful stereotypes. The authors argue that open, respectful dialogue and reciprocal knowledge-sharing across generations can improve collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and decision-making in fisheries. Ultimately, the article advocates for moving beyond generational labels to foster mutual respect and effective teamwork among fisheries professionals.
