Abstract
The article examines what authentic leadership entails under intense and overlapping pressures, particularly among mission-driven nonprofit and social impact leaders facing economic uncertainty, political polarization, and shifting funding landscapes. Based on surveys and discussions with over 400 global leaders, it identifies four key challenges: navigating unstable environments, making values-driven trade-offs, maintaining trust amid organizational strain, and managing heightened emotional burdens. The article offers three practical lessons for leaders across sectors: aiming for clear (not total) transparency in communication, holding dual truths by balancing courage with flexibility, and fostering collective resilience to mitigate burnout. Ultimately, authentic leadership under pressure involves naming uncertainty, staying grounded in core principles, and leading with care to sustain trust and mission focus.
