Abstract

The article focuses on the contributions and legacy of Martin K. Starr, who served as editor-in-chief of the journal Management Science for 15 years, becoming the longest-serving editor of any INFORMS journal. Starr significantly shaped the field of operations and supply chain management by developing frameworks for system integration, modular design and production, and high-risk systems. He introduced the concept of modular production and emphasized the connection between theoretical analysis and practical management applications. Starr also pioneered an editorial structure that decentralized decision-making in academic publishing and launched the influential "Free for All" column in Management Science. His work continues to influence management science scholarship and practice.
