Abstract

The article focuses on significant cyberattacks targeting major UK retailers, including Marks & Spencer (M&S), Co-op, and Harrods, which were executed through advanced social engineering tactics. Hackers impersonated employees to manipulate IT help desks into resetting passwords, leading to unauthorized access to internal networks. M&S reported a cyber incident that resulted in a 12% drop in share value and operational disruptions, with estimated financial losses of around £30 million ($40 million) and ongoing weekly losses of approximately £15 million. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has advised organizations to enhance help desk protocols to mitigate such risks, while concerns have been raised among other retailers regarding potential similar threats.
