Abstract

The article focuses on internal talent marketplaces (ITMs), digital platforms that align company needs with employee preferences by enabling workers and managers to match on job assignments. ITMs increase employee engagement, retention, and internal mobility by providing transparency and choice, as demonstrated by examples from the U.S. Army, Teach For America, Schneider Electric, and Google. While ITMs offer benefits such as reduced replacement costs, better placement in large or generalist workforces, and improved knowledge sharing, they also pose challenges like potential mismatches and talent concentration. Successful ITM implementation requires careful platform selection, cultural preparation, ongoing communication, and mechanisms such as nudges, incentives, and managerial oversight to balance organizational goals with employee agency.
