Abstract

The article focuses on the current debate over fluoride use in public water supplies and its impact on dental health. While some U.S. states and localities have recently banned water fluoridation amid concerns about potential health risks, including claims of lowered IQ in children at high exposures, most dentists and pediatricians maintain that fluoride is safe in small doses and effective in preventing cavities. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel by aiding remineralization and is delivered through various sources such as fluoridated water, toothpaste, varnishes, and supplements. Experts emphasize the importance of fluoride, especially for children in communities without fluoridated water, alongside good oral hygiene and reduced sugar intake to prevent dental decay. The removal of fluoride from water supplies may disproportionately affect vulnerable populations with limited access to dental care.
