Abstract

This article provides a historical account of the European Union (EU) and the challenges it has faced over the past three decades. It highlights the negotiations for the Maastricht Treaty in the early 1990s, which aimed to establish a single market and introduce a single currency. The article also discusses the EU's response to various events such as the global financial crisis, migration, populism, COVID-19, and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The book emphasizes the role of EU leaders in shaping the union's policies and addresses the impact of globalization and the rise of populism. It concludes by acknowledging the future challenges the EU faces, including energy security, strategic autonomy, a greener Europe, and further enlargement. [Extracted from the article]
