Real Estate Development and Economic Development Planning Education: Pragmatic Turn or Trojan Horse?

Abstract

This article examines the integration of real estate development education within economic development planning programs, highlighting tensions between real estate’s market-driven focus and economic development’s emphasis on social equity. Drawing on a 2019 panel at the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) conference, it discusses how planning educators can teach real estate finance and development skills while foregrounding social justice and community benefits. The authors argue that understanding real estate processes equips planners to engage effectively with developers and advocate for equitable outcomes, but caution against conflating real estate development with economic development, which may obscure broader goals of inclusive prosperity. They conclude that pedagogical approaches critically addressing social equity alongside financial viability are essential for reconciling these fields in planning education.
