Abstract
The article proposes a framework for the use of generative artificial intelligence as a tool for job crafting on the part of knowledge workers in order to increase their productivity and the perception of their job roles. Job crafting is defined as a self-initiated process whereby the employee can shape and adjust their job requirements and resources in order to fit their individual needs and circumstances. Generative AI can offer valuable assistance in job crafting by applying problem-solving and processing support in order to mitigate blockers such as knowledge gaps, time pressures, and the monotony of repetitive tasks. Studies have shown positive outcomes of those utilizing gen AI in writing and problem-solving tasks among college-educated professionals and among professional software developers who experienced higher performance satisfaction and reduced frustration levels. Gen AI tools are shown to be versatile, readily available, easy to use and are able to reduce gaps in skills and experience that impede performance. Managers can facilitate the adoption of gen AI job crafting through training initiatives and developing a culture of trust in the use of gen AI.
