Abstract
The article focuses on the challenges Western-trained managers face when leading global teams, emphasizing the need to develop "cultural intelligence"—the ability to adapt leadership styles to diverse cultural contexts. It identifies four common pitfalls for Western leaders: overemphasizing autonomy, psychological safety, cultural differences, and transparency, which can conflict with the values of the predominantly collectivist and hierarchical global workforce. Effective cross-cultural leadership requires flexible communication, nuanced motivation strategies, and fostering inclusive environments that respect cultural norms while maintaining team performance. The article highlights practical approaches, such as adjusting feedback styles, co-creating team norms, and encouraging perspective-taking, to navigate these complexities and enhance global team effectiveness.
