Abstract

The article focuses on a significant cyberattack that impacted British retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) in April 2025, resulting in extensive operational disruptions and financial losses. The attack was executed by two cybercriminal groups, Scattered Spider and DragonForce, leading to the encryption of M&S's servers and an estimated loss of £40 million per week in sales. Scattered Spider, known for its social engineering tactics, collaborated with DragonForce, a ransomware collective believed to be based in Russia, which provided the necessary tools for the breach. The attackers accessed M&S's systems through an IT contractor's email, compromising personal information of approximately 9.4 million customers, although payment and password data remained secure. The incident left M&S unable to process online orders for over six weeks, causing significant financial and reputational damage. [Extracted from the article]
