Abstract

This article examines the barriers hindering the implementation of school-based health programs (SHPs) in Ghana, identifying key challenges through qualitative research involving 116 educational stakeholders. The study found that limited financial, infrastructural, and human resources; weak parental and community participation; inadequate school leadership and management; and poor collaboration between the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ministry of Health (MOH) significantly impede the effectiveness and sustainability of SHPs. These findings highlight the need for stronger political commitment, improved intersectoral coordination, and enhanced resource allocation to support SHPs as a vital component of primary health care and education quality in Ghana. The study recommends establishing school health management committees and fostering innovative strategies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals to improve student health outcomes.
