Abstract
The article focuses on the challenges new managers face when transitioning from individual contributors to leadership roles, emphasizing common misconceptions that hinder their success. It highlights that new managers often mistakenly believe they gain formal authority, control, and freedom, whereas in reality they must navigate complex interdependencies, build credibility, and foster team commitment rather than mere compliance. The transition requires unlearning old habits, developing influence through relationships, and balancing operational responsibilities with initiating change to improve team performance. The article also underscores the importance of support from peers and superiors, noting that many new managers struggle with isolation and reluctance to seek help due to fears of appearing incompetent.
