Abstract
The article focuses on Hongkui Deng’s pioneering human diabetes trial that uses a novel stem cell reprogramming technique to enable patients to produce their own insulin. Deng, a professor of cell biology at Peking University, adapted a method originally developed by Nobel laureate Shinya Yamanaka to chemically reprogram a patient’s extracted fat cells into insulin-producing cells without genetic engineering. Early results from the trial show that patients with type 1 diabetes have become insulin-independent, with one patient maintaining normal blood sugar levels for nearly two years. This approach represents a potential functional cure for diabetes and may be extended to treat other conditions such as liver failure.
