Abstract
The article focuses on enhancing the relevance and impact of operations management (OM) research by identifying key opportunities in technology-enabled operations and societal applications. It traces the evolution of OM from its origins in the late 19th century through developments in quantitative and empirical methods, globalization, and digital transformation, highlighting current challenges in maintaining the field's unique identity. Emphasizing the importance of addressing real-world complexities, the article advocates for research that integrates operational realities, collaborates with industry and policymakers, and communicates effectively with practitioners and students. It concludes that embracing these approaches can help OM research positively influence business practices and societal issues such as healthcare, sustainability, and nonprofit operations.
