Abstract

This article focuses on the development and application of the Evaluation Tool for WOAH Day One Graduating Veterinarian Competencies, a semi-quantitative survey designed to systematically assess the proficiency of new veterinary graduates in the 19 competencies outlined by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). Developed through a collaboration between the University of Gondar College of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences (UoG-CVMAS) in Ethiopia and The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine (OSU-CVM), the tool complements curriculum mapping by capturing perceptions from faculty, students, recent graduates, and external stakeholders regarding graduate competency. Its implementation at UoG-CVMAS informed a curriculum redesign aligned with WOAH standards, which subsequently influenced the national veterinary curriculum in Ethiopia and has been adapted for use globally. While the tool relies on indirect assessment through stakeholder perceptions rather than direct graduate evaluation, it offers a flexible, validated methodology to identify curricular gaps and guide improvements in veterinary education worldwide.
