Abstract
The article focuses on recent developments in the European telecommunications sector, highlighting enhanced cybersecurity measures, infrastructure expansion, and emerging satellite connectivity trends. EE, part of BT Group, has upgraded its Scam Guard service to better protect customers from cyber threats, blocking billions of malicious attempts in 2025. Altibox Carrier is advancing the Verena subsea cable project, a 512 Tbps system linking the UK and Denmark to boost UK–Nordic connectivity by 2028. Virgin Media Business Wholesale, the wholesale arm of Virgin Media O2, has joined the Connectbase Seller Cloud platform to expand global access to its UK network infrastructure. Additionally, research from Omdia indicates that 22% of European mobile network operators are engaging with direct-to-device (D2D) satellite technology, currently in early commercialization stages, primarily to enhance coverage and resilience rather than generate standalone revenue.
