Abstract

Dutch airline KLM is urging the European Union (EU) to take action against what it considers to be unfair competition from Chinese airlines. KLM's CEO, Marjan Rintel, has called for measures to address the advantage Chinese airlines have due to their ability to fly over Russian airspace, while EU airlines have been unable to do so since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Rintel explains that avoiding Russian airspace adds significant flying time and increases flight prices. This request comes as other European airlines, such as British Airways and Deutsche Lufthansa, are also considering reducing flights to China due to competition challenges.
