Abstract
This article focuses on medico-legal considerations in urologic surgical interventions, particularly genital gender-affirming surgery (gGAS), and the development of a smartphone application for audio-recording patient consultations. The study reviews medico-legal claims related to poor communication and informed consent in the UK, US, and a Californian quaternary care center, finding that inadequate documentation contributes significantly to legal actions. Patients who used audio recordings during gGAS consultations reported reduced anxiety and increased confidence in treatment decisions, leading to fewer follow-up queries. Based on patient feedback, a user-friendly app was created to securely record and share consultation audio, which may help mitigate medico-legal risks and improve patient care. The authors suggest that broader, multi-center studies are needed to further evaluate this approach.
