Abstract

The article focuses on strategies for Western companies to safely engage with China on environmental sustainability and climate change amid geopolitical tensions. It highlights China’s significant role as the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide (27% of global emissions) and its vast market potential for green technologies, alongside the complexities posed by political strains, regulatory challenges, and disrupted business ties. Four key approaches are recommended: making sustainability a core global strategy, forming or joining coalitions to create safe spaces for technology development, forging partnerships with local Chinese companies for market access, and insourcing Chinese innovations in clean technology. These strategies emphasize collaboration with local partners and coalitions to balance risks and opportunities while advancing climate goals in a complex geopolitical environment.
