Abstract

This article examines how growth-oriented startups influence neighborhood transformation, using data from Greater London as a case study. It finds that increased startup activity correlates with demographic shifts—older, less educated, blue-collar residents are replaced by younger, more educated, white-collar workers—and changes in local amenities, such as more expensive and diverse restaurants. The presence of startups also predicts subsequent rises in residential real estate prices, particularly in lower-priced neighborhoods, though these gains primarily benefit landlords rather than long-term residents due to low homeownership rates. The study highlights entrepreneurship-driven gentrification as a distinct, emergent form of urban renewal that raises questions about inequality and the sustainability of entrepreneurial ecosystems.
