Abstract

The article focuses on how generative artificial intelligence (AI) agents are threatening the revenue streams of major digital platforms such as Google, Amazon, Meta, and others by shifting consumer interactions away from traditional platform interfaces. AI agents autonomously make purchase decisions, bypassing ads, reducing transaction fees, and undermining subscription loyalty, thereby eroding platforms’ advertising, transaction, subscription, and ecosystem service revenues. Unlike platforms that rely on behavioral data within their ecosystems, AI agents gain a holistic understanding of users by accessing diverse personal data, creating a competitive advantage that platforms struggle to match. To respond, platforms can resist through legal means, adapt by developing their own AI agents, or reinvent their business models to become agent-ready, exemplified by initiatives like the Universal Commerce Protocol. The article concludes that the shift to AI agent-driven commerce is accelerating rapidly, posing significant challenges to the traditional platform economy and requiring urgent strategic adjustments by platform operators and related businesses.
