Abstract
The article focuses on the challenges and risks of business succession planning in closely held companies, emphasizing that unlike public corporations, many private businesses lack effective succession plans. It outlines five problematic scenarios—including poor record keeping by single-owner businesses, commingling of personal and business assets by older entrepreneurs, operational disruptions after an owner’s sudden death, family disputes over control, and inappropriate takeover by unqualified parties—that can jeopardize a business’s continuity. The article stresses the importance of proactively assessing and preparing successors among existing stakeholders to preserve business value and avoid posthumous mismanagement or conflict. It concludes that while no single solution fits all cases, recognizing the inevitability of leadership transition and planning accordingly is essential for sustaining a business legacy.
