Why Employees Quit.

Abstract

The article focuses on how employers can improve hiring and retention by addressing employees’ “quests for progress,” a concept derived from research on why people switch jobs. It identifies four main motivations for job changes—getting out of a bad situation, regaining control, realigning work with skills and values, and taking the next career step—and emphasizes that sustainable work experiences must align with these individual quests. The authors recommend that managers engage employees early about their previous job moves, develop detailed “shadow” job descriptions reflecting real day-to-day experiences, and collaborate with HR to tailor roles that support both employee progress and organizational needs. This approach aims to create mutually beneficial employee experiences that reduce costly attrition and foster meaningful career development.
