Abstract
This article explores how leaders can navigate a growing sense of instability driven by policy volatility, rapid AI adoption, and increasing geopolitical fragmentation, including rising trade barriers, sanctions, and constraints on the movement of capital, data, talent, and critical resources. It explains how fear reshapes leadership behavior—narrowing focus, suppressing innovation, and prompting patterns such as decision deferral, excessive control, and loss of strategic narrative—ultimately undermining long-term value creation. The authors argue that effective leadership in this environment requires converting fear into focus through structured responses, including building policy intelligence systems, adopting flexible “real options” strategies, establishing clear AI doctrines, protecting time for strategic thinking, and strengthening geopolitical resilience, all while fostering trust, clarity, and a coherent organizational vision.
