Abstract

This article explores the evolving role of leadership in clinical psychology from the perspective of trainee clinical psychologists, emphasizing the need for innovative, inclusive, and transformative leadership to address contemporary challenges in mental health care. It highlights key areas for future leaders, including fostering trust and psychological safety within teams, tackling systemic racism and whiteness in the profession, expanding prevention and public health approaches, advocating for adequate resources through business competencies, and prioritizing staff wellbeing to reduce burnout. The authors also call for statutory regulation of psychological practitioners to protect the public and stress the importance of diverse, compassionate leadership that actively dismantles power imbalances and promotes equity. Ultimately, the paper urges emerging clinical psychology leaders to embrace these responsibilities to effect meaningful change within the NHS and wider society.
