Abstract
The article focuses on three distinct approaches to leading organizational learning—custodians, challengers, and connectors—and how aligning these styles with a company’s specific needs affects the success of learning initiatives. Custodians prioritize learning that serves organizational strategy and alignment, challengers emphasize individual growth and innovation, and connectors integrate both perspectives to foster collaboration and community. Research involving leaders of learning at 69 multinational firms reveals that mismatches between learning approaches and organizational contexts often undermine effectiveness. Understanding these approaches can help executives better select and support learning leaders to enhance talent development, innovation, and inclusion within their organizations.
